 
Antonio Artigas is a Professor of Applied Physiology and Chair of Sepsis and Acute Respiratory Failure  Research  at  the  Autonomous  University  of  Barcelona.  He  was  the  Director  of  the Intensive Care Medicine Department at Corporacion Sanitaria Universitaria Parc Tauli 1988-2016 and now Emeritus Director and Director of the Pathophysiological Translational and Cell Therapy  Laboratory.  
He  completed  his  training  in  Barcelona  University  and  became  MD  in 1973  and  PhD  in  1992.  He  was  certified  in  internal  medicine  in  1976  and  intensive  care medicine in 1982. He is a member of several societies such as ESA, ESCIM, ATS, SRLF (for which he was the vice president from 1991 – 1993), CIBER and chairman to the ERS critical care group and HERMES respiratory critical care program. 
He is an honorary member of the European Society of Intensive Care and member of the Advisory Committee of Sepsis of the Government in Catalonia. Prof. Artigas is International Corresponding Member of Académie Nationale de Médicine since 2016. He is on the editorial boards of critical care and respiratory journals.  
He  received  50  awards  such  as  Educational  Award  of  the  European  Respiratory Society in 2015 and more than 30 research grants funded by the Spanish Research Agency and EU research programs.
